WHAT IS PALEO?

Wikipedia defines it as this, “The Paleolithic Diet is a modern nutritional plan based on the presumed ancient diet of wild plants and animals that various hominid species habitually consumed during the Paleolithic era.”

In a nutshell, the Paleo Diet is based on the notion that for optimal health we should go back to eating real, whole, unprocessed foods. It is based on the idea that for many ages our ancestors have eaten a diet consisting of what they could hunt and gather, such as organic vegetables, grass-fed/free range meats, wild seafood, eggs, and some fruits and nuts. The diet leaves out grains, gluten, dairy, legumes, soy, sugar, and any refinined or processed food.

Today’s food markets are riddled with mass-produced and made to last foods. The Paleo Diet leaves the processed, man made foods out. If you spend more time reading the ingredient list on packaged foods than you do trying to navigate the self-checkout kiosk at your local grocer then Paleo foods are right for you.

Paleo offers a solution to the mass production and unknown quality that has become the standard for modern and mainstream foods. The benefits of the Paleo Diet are found in the ingredients and ultimately in the way they make you feel – if it feels wrong eating it, it probably is.

WHY PALEO?

The OED states, diet as,  “the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.” A diet is habitual. The Paleo Diet is a way of life, something that has allowed our eating habits to be simplified. It allows our bodies to achieve the goals we seek whether that is weight gain/loss, athletic performance, health issues, or generally feeling good.

Research has shown that a rise in heart disease, diabetes, and cancer can be directly linked to the poor nutritional value of the modern, over processed, grain-based diet. The Paleo Diet has often been referred to as the “food for fuel” diet.  In other words, put the best fuel in your body and you will feel and perform better. Leave the chemicals, processing, and man made foods out and you will feel and perform better. It is a simple principle – eat things that our bodies can digest well, that nourish us, and allow our bodies to properly self regulate. The best foods for the best fuel because food really is our fuel.

We also believe that there is no “one size fits all” template for the Paleo Diet. Every individual needs different things for different reasons.
